Unattended Remote Intelligent Monitoring for Offshore Oil & Gas Platforms ——Case Study: Oil Spill Monitoring & Control System for an Offshore Block in the South China Sea

2026-03-24 09:04

Offshore energy development plays a critical role in global energy supply and marine ecological sustainability. In a certain oil and gas operating area in the South China Sea, traditional manual inspection methods created monitoring blind spots during nighttime and severe weather. During typhoon seasons, monitoring was often interrupted when platforms were unmanned, increasing the risk of oil spills, environmental pollution, and production shutdowns.

In 2024, an intelligent oil spill monitoring project was implemented to address these challenges. The system provides full-area coverage, real‑time sensing, and remote early warning, enabling 24/7 online supervision even when platforms are unattended.

Integrated Intelligent Monitoring System

The explosion‑proof oil spill monitoring system consists of an explosion‑proof oil spill detector camera and a monitoring workstation. The architecture is compact, highly compatible, and suitable for both standalone deployments and complex offshore environments.

The system integrates pulsed laser sensing and spectral analysis technology to detect oil films on the sea surface in real time. A laser beam scans the target area, stimulating characteristic spectral radiation from oil films. A high‑precision receiver captures this signal and rapidly identifies the presence of oil contamination with high accuracy.

The system adopts a lightweight architecture consisting of explosion‑proof field devices and the NIOTEX monitoring workstation. Using existing satellite communication resources, monitoring data can be transmitted reliably to the onshore command center. Core functions include:

• Real‑time Alarm – Instant alerts with visual and audible notifications

• Precise Positioning – Automatic leak location identification

• Trend Analysis – Real‑time concentration data and spill diffusion modeling

• Data Archiving – Snapshot and video recording for incident analysis

Project Implementation

The project followed a customized full‑cycle service model:

1.Requirement Analysis & Solution Design

Multiple technical consultations and site surveys to optimize system configuration.

2.Deployment & System Integration

Installation carried out according to offshore construction standards, enabling multi‑platform, all‑weather monitoring coverage.

3.Lifecycle Support

Turnkey services including testing, design, deployment, training, and long‑term maintenance.

Operational Performance

Since commissioning, the system has operated reliably under heavy rain, high salinity, strong sunlight, and typhoon conditions.

It has demonstrated stable performance with high detection accuracy and low false alarm rates. Even when platforms are evacuated during extreme weather, monitoring data continues to be transmitted in real time to the onshore control center, enabling remote risk assessment without personnel exposure.

Project Value

• Enables continuous monitoring in unattended offshore environments.

• Transforms management from reactive response to proactive early warning.

• Provides a scalable solution for multi‑platform offshore monitoring scenarios.

• Demonstrates reliable deployment of advanced intelligent monitoring equipment for offshore energy safety and environmental protection.

The company will continue focusing on intelligent safety and environmental monitoring technologies. Through ongoing innovation and lifecycle service capabilities, it aims to provide reliable solutions for offshore energy development, industrial safety management, and ecological protection worldwide.
